Fixing points for racing style harnesses / seat sub-frames / roll cages
Hello all, Im thinking about installing racing style bucket seats, 3 or 4 point harnesses, and a roll cage in my 97 cooper. Can anyone provide some advice about the following items???? 1 - Can i use the original seat belt mounting points? 2 - Where is the best place to mounts the other harness belts in the back? Bear in mind i may need to get people in there too! 3 - What is the best seat subframe if I also need to get people in the back(sliding style subframe i suppose?) 4 - Is it better to weld in a roll cage or are the bolt in ones ok. I am trying to do this for protection, not just for show! Thanks Matt

Bucket seat sub-frames
Im saving up for some cobra classic bucket seats, but im not sure on how the sub-frame fits. is it a case of bolting it to the existing front brackets and the bar at the back, or is their welding to be done? if anyone can shed some light on this, i would greatly appreciae it. Many thanks Stu

hmm, havent heard of that one yet, might have to try that give me a bit more room :)
With the rear bins, am i correct in saying you cant cut these without adding strengthening if your still using the seat belt anchor?

bucket seats
there are two types of mountings available, sub-frames, and site mount brackets. not sure about about the side mounted brackets, but the under-seat-mounted sub-frames should ge through an MOT no problem. But, even though the frames arent cheap, they arent necassarily good quality, the frames i got needed now holes drilling cuz they didnt fit the seat. just make sure theyre nice and tight and youll have a new MOT certificate no trouble. cobra monaco seats trouble
I take it the problem is with the shoulder supports? I fitted the seat frame on the inboard side of the seat brackets and loosened both brackets and pushed them both as inboard as they will go ang it just cleared the door. You'll need to make up a small plate to fit in the seat brackets to stop them squashing when you tighten up the bolts.

The people I brought cobra seats and frames from have returned my call and what they do is cut the first two holes away at the front mountings so you are only left with the one hole on each front mount. Have tried this and it seems to work. You also need to have the orginal mountings that bolt into the box section and the bar that is bolted into rear floor pan.

Fitting seats
I managed to get a pair of reclinable buckets from a Volvo 440 - the sporty model - (very similar to recaros) for free. What seat frames would be my best bet for fitting them to my mini?

I’m looking for a set of Clubman seats and seat frames for a pick up. The seats must be in A1 order. Can anyone help? Cheers, David

Frames
What sort of fixings do they have underneath and are they flat bottomed are the two main questions. If they are flat and the spacing is right for the fixings, you might get away with an after market subframe for Cobra seats etc. If not, you may need to try a set of base mounts from Deamon Tweeks and the like that are for posh racing seats. Either way you will probably have to mod the frames a bit. I have Recaros in mine and they are fitted using an after market pair of slide rails and a second cross member welded into the car to mount it all on. Big job but adds loads of strength to the body.

These
I am getting these seats with tailored sub-frames so i assume from what youve told me that itll be the bolt on. And these wont tilt unless i pull a lever or something? just like the standard seats? Stu

re:
Ultimately it depends what seats you opt for. composite seats i.e. carbon/fibreglass frame are usually side mounted whereas steel framed seats like the popular cobra clubman are base mounted. Also what you use your car for, if you need the rear seats you really need base mounted seats.
Also a consideration, side mounted seats will have to be fixed behind the crossmember so make sure you're tall enough to reach the pedals/gearlever etc from back there.
I use my car on trackdays/sprints and as an everyday driver. i've got cobra clubman buckets but i've modified the seat subframes to get them to sit a little lower and i've moved the mounts for the drivers seat towards the centre of the car a little and welded them to the back of the crossmember instead of the front to give myself more legroom

frames
I think the MOT requirement relates to the anti-tip feature that some seat frames have. The really basic ones just have legs at the back but the better ones have a hook and lever that works just like the standard seats. Get the subframe with anti-tip to be sure. They bolt on to the standard mini fixing points so are very simple to fit.

seats
dont know if anyone can help but i am looking at buying new seats. I have seen these seats:
http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=33531
but i was wondering whether or not they pivot forward to gain access to the back seats like the standard factory seats. Also do they fit on to the original seat frames or will i need to buy new frames?? As you can see i am just a little bit confused. its probably really simple in my face but i cant see it
cheeeeers DJ
while im on the subject how do the harness attach to the car, i assume they just bolt on but to what? the floor? i know you can get the cross members that attach to a cage but i dont have one and am not planning on getting one. As well as this i would still like to have access to the back seats.
thakns again dj

bikes in minis
i ride BMX so im not sure if a bigger MTB would get in. Usually i only take off the front wheel and manage to put the frame inbetween the front and rear seats on the floor. it works best with the front of the bike behind the drivers seat and the passenger seat set well forward makin room for the rear wheel. it fits even better if you take both wheels off but its a pain in the arse tightning the chain every time etc.. on a similar storage subject, does anyone know where you can get retro mini roofracks from?

I take it you want to have the seats tilting? I havent tried Metro seats, but anything taller than the standard low back mini ones get stuck on the roof and wont tilt forward. Most basic after market seat frames for Cobra bucket seats and the like are made up of two sliding rails and two cross members the fit to the existing mount points. The whole thing is only bolted together so you could probably make something up from that. If you dont want it to tilt, Ive fitted scrivets in the cross member (its a rivet you can screw a bolt into) and bolt the seat rails directly down onto that. I do have two cross members on mine though which makes this a little easier.
